Baby Star Quilt
Paper Piecing was scary and daunting. Until I gave it a try. Then, it was fabulous. Actually, that’s not technically true. I bit off waaaaaaaay more than I could chew with the first paper piecing pattern I chose.
Paper piecing is fabulous, with a pattern that is an easier level of difficulty. Wombat Quilts is a paper piecing queen, AND she’s got a whole bunch of free patterns and templates on her website!
At some point while making the Big Blue Quilt for my dad, I miscounted blocks, panicked, and made a bunch more. Somehow I ended up with 10 leftover blocks, but at 8 inches square, it wasn’t enough to make a whole quilt. I figured combined with 10 other blocks, also 8 inches finished, I’d have a perfect size for a baby quilt.
Since half of the blocks were “leftovers,” I wanted to do something special for the remaining blocks, and I thought paper pieced stars would be perfect!
Since the original blocks were a mix of blue and gray, for the stars I used a gray background, and blue for the bulk of the stars. To liven it up a bit, I added yellow and teal scraps to the mix.
There are 5 star patterns, and I used each twice. There are TONS of patterns and templates on the Wombat Quilts website; I made sure all of mine stated that the finished size was 8 inches.
I am so happy with how this quilt turned out! I’m so glad I was able to use up the miscounted blocks, but didn’t end up with anything resembling leftovers.
Don’t worry, I’ve also go a post that walks you through the steps of paper piecing, check it out here.
And in case you missed it while scrolling through, each star photo links to the original pattern on Wombat Quilts.

Thank you! A post coming soon will show that it’s actually much easier than it appears.

You might have bit off more than you expected but you persevered. And enjoyed it.
It is the most elaborate quilt you have made.
I hope you post it someday
Darcy
That I should!

Hi Darcy! This is a beautiful quilt! I haven’t done paper piecing in ages and ages. I imagine I didn’t like it as I gave it up, but I honestly don’t recall. Your blocks certainly intrigue me so I’ll watch for your post for encouragement. ~smile~ Roseanne

Thanks Roseanne! The next post is available too. I should go back and put a link into this post, to direct to the tutorial.

Oh wow, this doesn’t look easy at all. A beautiful quilt filled with oodles of visual interest. Those little pops of yellow really made me smile.
Darcy
Thanks Kim! It really was quite easy to make. I’m glad it looks hard when it was easy, rather than the opposite!

It’s beautiful! Great way to use those leftover blocks and the addition of the yellow really brightens it up. Thanks for linking with TGIFF 🙂

Nothing goes to waste, but gets new life of its own!

A very cute baby quilt. I love how you made something from extra blocks you had. Though I never would have guessed it wasn’t totally planned out if you hadn’t told me.
Darcy
Thanks Yvonne! It felt good to repurpose something, but make it look brand-new!
