9-Patch Quilt Pattern

There are two quilt blocks in this free jelly roll quilt pattern, and they are nearly identical.

Block A is made of 5 squares of Background 1 fabric and 4 squares of Jelly Roll fabrics.  Block B is made of 4 squares of Background 2 fabric and 5 squares of Jelly Roll fabrics.

If you want to make the scrappiest of scrappy 9-Patch quilts, you certainly can cut and sew all of those individual little squares.  But, this is a free jelly roll quilt pattern.  The quilt goes together so, so fast because those jelly roll strips can be sewn together and then sub-cut into the individual pieces needed to make each quilt block.

Color Challenge

I have been dreaming of making a quilt in this color palette for years, and I even set a goal this last year to branch out and work with new color palettes to keep myself from getting stuck in a rut.

I started by pulling lots of purples, oranges and bright pinks together.  For this quilt I decided that the darker the purple the better, so that it would balance out the bright oranges and pinks.

Even before sewing the blocks together, I knew I had a winning color palette!  I just love how this looks!

Now, I have never seen a pre-made jelly roll in purples, pinks and oranges.  So, I made my own!

Making Your Own Jelly Roll

A jelly roll is 40 strips cut 2½” by width of fabric.  And it is incredibly easy to make your own.

Just grab your ruler and rotary cutter and start cutting your yardage into 2½” strips.

Less easy, rolling your strips into a jelly roll!

For this pattern, you will need two background fabrics in addition to your jelly roll, and you cut them into the same 2½” strips.

National Sew a Jelly Roll Day

National Sew a Jelly Roll Day is coming up on Saturday, September 17th and I will be making this free jelly roll quilt pattern, using an Under the Apple Tree Jelly Roll and Checkers in Navy by Rifle Paper Co. and Dash Flow in Papyrus as my two background fabrics.

I hope you will quilt-along with me that day!  I’ll be posting regular sewing updates on both Instagram and Facebook. Last year I did not finish my whole quilt on National Sew a Jelly Roll Day, so I had myself a little Sew a Jelly Roll Weekend instead.
