Adjusting Quilt Colors – How to Change the Look of a Quilt

Adjusting quilt colors – making an old pattern look brand new just by changing up the colors used using a little color theory. The quilt I’m sharing today looks NOTHING like the original pattern!

Diamond Quilt

This very soft and sweet baby quilt came from my Farmhouse Plaid quilt pattern and a whole bunch of scraps in my stash.

The original Farmhouse Plaid quilts use just three colors (light, medium and dark) to make a gingham check plaid.  The pattern includes both small and large diamonds.

Note to self, those cherry blossom trees ought to be peaking in the next few weeks.  I should take some quilts on a walk around the block for photos!

The quilt I am sharing with you today is made from that same pattern, just switching around the colors!  Adjusting quilt colors can drastically change the look of a pattern!

Instead of light, medium and dark, this version of the quilt is made with white and non –white fabrics.

The white fabrics are actually a bunch of black designs on white fabric. They replace both the dark and light fabrics in the original pattern. 

The non-white fabrics are a mix of blacks, grays, blues, greens, pinks and purples.  These fabrics are used everywhere the pattern calls for “medium”.

Paint Chips

This post today is more about how I swapped out some colors for others. I did this to intentionally change the overall look of the pattern. However, I have also published a tutorial previously on How to Pick Colors for a Quilt using paint chips and the monochrome feature on images to change the color palette without changing the quilt.

This quilt has already sold in my Quilt Shop, but the quilting on the polka dot flannel back makes me so happy, and I love the zig zag striped binding!
