Carillon Quilt Pattern

The Carillon Quilt Pattern is now live!

Woo hoo!

This pattern has taken longer than average to write (naming things is HARD!!!), as you can see by the very snowy photos in the beginning, but I am so excited to share the Carillon Quilt Pattern with you today.

Carillon started back in December, with a fat quarter bundle of Ladybird Fabrics (Instagram) and a very snowy few days when quilting was far preferable to being outside in the well below freezing temperatures.

Carillon is a twist on a traditional Broken Dishes quilt block and I’m really happy with how this vision came to life.  This is my most favorite block from all three of the Carillon Quilt Pattern test quilts that I made.

I finished this large throw version in January, just in time for some very foggy photos.  The quilt and I were both soaked through in just minutes taking these photos on a cold morning.

Naming a Quilt Pattern

Now, you might be thinking, why did it take so long to write this pattern?  Is this a very hard quilt to make?

The quilt making is fairly easy, its lots of half square triangles.  While this tutorial won’t replace the pattern, if you need a HST refresher, check out this Half Square Triangle tutorial.

No, the hard part was naming this quilt.  It took me months to think of a name.  I even reached out to friends and family to ask for suggestions.  And while some of those name options were AWESOME, not only does the quilt name have to work for the pattern in question, it also needs to not be in use by some other quilt pattern writer already.

A carillon is a bell tower.  I arrived at Carillon after looking at synonyms for Fog Lights and Lighthouses.  I think I was focused on a foggy name because of those foggy pictures I took.  After I spent a little time with Pharos as the name, I found that it’s already in use for another lovely quilt pattern.  From there the thesaurus took me through “tower” and on to Carillon.

While there are no bells in this quilt, an important part of a fog light is a fog horn, but bells are much less harsh than a fog horn.  And here we are at Carillon Quilt Patten.

Six Quilt Sizes

In addition to this large throw size, Carillon comes in 6 total sizes from baby blanket up to king bed size.

Sweet Carillon Baby Quilts

I made two baby size versions of Carillon as I was testing out the pattern.

The first started with this fun Stellar print and the gold stars from Primavera.

While the Ladybird version of the quilt was made without background fabric, I wanted to show what these quilt blocks looked like with half of the yardage as background fabrics too.

This one has a fun, scrappy yellow binding.

The other version of the baby quilt that I made started with a handful of fat quarters from the Primrose Hill fabric collection and then I added in other coordinating prints from my stash.

While this quilt does have some neutrals and other low volume prints, it doesn’t have a strictly background fabric and I am so, so happy with how it turned out!  I particularly like the pops of softer reds (not quite pink but also not quite red) that pull out some similar reds in the littles flowers.

Carillon Quilt Pattern Quilts for Sale

For the first time ever, in the history of Darcy Quilts pattern releases, all three quilt samples are available on my Etsy shop.  Usually one or two of the samples has an intended recipient as it’s made, but this time around none were accounted for and all are available.  You can find the quilts in the Quilts for Sale section of my Etsy shop.
