Domingo Quilt – A Stained Glass Window Quilt Pattern
I’ve been planning out this stained glass window quilt pattern for a long time and the Domingo Quilt Pattern finally releases today!
What’s a Stained-Glass Window Quilt
Close your eyes and image the stained-glass windows that you’ve seen in cathedrals and old buildings and other places.
Do you see bright colors?
Do you see dark bands of lead separating all of the bits of bright colors?
That’s a stained-glass window quilt!
Each bright square or rectangle of fabric is surrounded by thin strips of sashing fabric. The blocks are also separated by sashing fabric, slightly wider strips than within the blocks.
Does a Stained Glass Window Quilt Have to Have Black Sashing?
Nope!
I made 3 sample quilts.
The first has cream sashing.
The second has black. Instead of one fabric for sashing, this one is actually a scrappy mix of many black on black fabrics.
From a distance, you can’t even tell that there is more than one sashing fabric.
The third stained-glass window quilt has a snowflake on navy sashing.
This one ended up quite a bit busier than I had planned, and the stained-glass effect is less clear from a distance, but it is perfect in person.
What’s a Domingo?
Domingo is Spanish for Sunday.
Why This Name for This Quilt?
For several years, I attended a small church that met in the cafeteria of the local elementary school.
While the windows were not stained-glass, they did cover the entire wall behind the preacher. I’d like to tell you that I’m a better person than I am and that the service held my full attention each week with no day dreaming out the windows.
But you and I both know we wouldn’t be here today if those windows had never pulled my attention.
Swirling snowflakes. Changing colors. One little squirrel racing up and down tree trunks and branches.
There was a lot to see out the windows.
And then, I started to notice the windows themselves. The repeating pattern was 3 large squares, over 6 small and large rectangles. There were other shapes too, but these were the ones my eyes were drawn to over and over again.
This quilt was named before I even started drafting the math to make the blocks work.
Since that time the church has moved online, relocated and closed. Not one Sunday has passed since then that I didn’t wish to be back in that cafeteria, surrounded by those windows, leaning in to worship and a sermon, while doing life with the people I love most.
One Block, Two Quilts
Domingo Quilt Pattern can be made with all blocks facing the same direction or with the blocks rotating 90* throughout the quilt.
While the dark sashing version of the quilt has already been snatched up, the winter version and the cream version are both still available. The winter one has snowflake flannel on the back and is bound with strings of lights. This is the same collection of fabric that I used in a Christmas quilt last year, and they would make a great pair! The cream one is backed in aqua flannel and has a darker aqua/white star binding.
The Domingo Pattern is available now and you should definitely check it out!
