Kings Crown Quilt Block
This is the Kings Crown Quilt Block, and this is my first quilting-for-fun project for the year!
I set myself a goal this year to do more quilting for fun, as I was a bit worn down with {self-imposed} deadlines last year and always thinking about how to best market a recent project.
I needed a break!
Let’s be honest, I still need a break. Maybe several.
So the whole point of this goal was that I could do some quilting and not write a tutorial, or share on social media, or write a blog post, or any of that.
Yet, here I am, with a blog post about the Kings Crown Quilt Block.
Listen, this quilt is too good not to share!
What I did, to maintain my commitment to do some sewing without writing a tutorial while at the same time giving you the information to make the quilt yourself is this – I sewed and quilted without taking a single photo.
After I was done quilting, I threw together a couple of quick graphics so that you also can make this quilt block.
Kings Crown Quilt Block Tutorial
This is the Kings Crown Quilt Block.
This is what it looks like with some color.
The reason I realized I could offer you a quick tutorial without writing a tutorial, is because I have ALREADY written this tutorial!
The Kings Crown Quilt Block goes together like this.
This is what the blocks look like with fabric:
Guess what? Those same exact pieces are used to make the Sawtooth Star Quilt Block.
I’ve already written a Sawtooth Star Quilt Tutorial, including cutting directions for a variety of different sized blocks. Go check out that tutorial, and it when it comes to putting the blocks together, move those four flying geese units around and you’ve got the Kings Crown Quilt Block instead.
I made my quilt by alternating dark and light backgrounds, and by placing my greens from light to dark.
The reason I made this quilt is a funny one! I saw a picture on New Year’s Day that said you should make THIS block based on your birth month. And, you should use THIS color based on the first initial of your name. Or, something like that, I don’t remember the specifics. I actually switched up the colors, I was supposed to do purple, but after so much purple in the Quiltville Mystery Quilt, I decided to use minty greens instead.
I finished this quilt with black and white striped binding.
It actually has a black and white striped flannel backing too, but I forgot to take a picture of that. Oops!

Beautiful quilt! I love your color choices. I can imagine the star to be there but the color placement makes such a difference in the 2 blocks. Wow

Good for you for taking a break. How difficult was it to follow a pattern you had not made?
Did you ever think, why not do it this way instead?
The light minty blocks look like different blocks from the dark ones! Did you realize that would happen? And prior to starting, did you realize it was the same pieces as Sawtooth Star.
So glad you are occasionally quilting for fun

Got a new long arm in December. 4 quilts later and I think I need a break…NOT!
I’ll take a break when Spring arrives.
I love the Kings Crown. I’ve got my rotary cutter ready!

Thank you for the drawing. I wish other designers would do this. I am a visual-show me- learner. I also appreciate the break down on how to sew it. This will be put on the bucket list; while I find fabrics from the stash. I have a mission for 2024 to not purchase any fabric.

That’s a good goal! I agree, tutorials need to have visuals.
