Log Cabin quilts have been around for as long as anyone can remember.  The premise is simple, start with a square of fabric and add additional strips of fabric around and around and around until the block is as large as you like.

My first Modern Log Cabin Quilt happened almost by accident.  Necessity really is the mother of invention.  I had this really pretty bright floral on black background fabric, but I didn’t have very much of it.  I also had lots of fabric scraps that coordinated nicely, but again, not much total yardage of it.  I needed to find a way (from my stash – with no shopping at all!) to bulk up my yardage to quilt size, without taking away from the beautiful colors I had collected.

Thus was born Modern Log Cabin Quilt Pattern, version 1.0

As soon as I started writing quilt patterns two years ago, I knew that this was a pattern I wanted to include in my collection.

I hoped and hoped to repeat my success with the bright floral on black background fabric, and spent many months searching for just the right fabric.  Nothing met my (admittedly) high standards!  Currently, it is much easier to find florals on navy background, and while pretty, they just wouldn’t do for this particular project.

I finally gave up hope for the perfect multicolored fabric, and picked out a white on black fabric for my border instead, did a little bit of tweaking to the pattern, and here is the Modern Log Cabin Quilt Pattern Version 2.0!  I used lots of blues and greens, and a handful of yellows.

As soon as I picked out a white on black border fabric, I was given a super bright colors on black fabric (exclamation points!!!) and knew right away it was perfect for a Modern Log Cabin Quilt.

As this quilt pattern has been so dependent on finding the right border fabric first, I wanted to see what it would look like with no border.  While not specifically included in the pattern directions, this last version is made according the Throw Size directions and yardage, and simply doesn’t have a border added.

Now this last version is proof that even pattern writers need to follow directions when making quilts, because I sewed every single one of those black/color blocks together incorrectly.  Seriously, 10 blocks, all wrong.   The only upside to that was that we had a bazillion feet of snow, two snow days, and plenty of extra minutes in the day in which to cut apart all ten blocks and sew them back together correctly.

Just follow the graphics in the pattern, you won’t make the same mistake as me, thinking I could do it from memory.

This is a quick and easy quilt pattern, it’s great for all skill levels, and it comes in several sizes from couch sized throw up to king size bed quilt.

Go take a look at the Modern Log Cabin Quilt Pattern.  I’m hoping to find a good Christmas print on black background, to use as the border for my next version, let me know if you know of a good fabric line!
