Quilted Christmas Tree Skirt Tutorial
The last installment of the 2024 Christmas in July is this Quilted Christmas Tree Skirt Tutorial.
Ha! I intended to share this post back in July.
And then I bought a condo.
Packing took priority over everything else. Unpacking too.
I finally unpacked Christmas items and could take a photo of the completed quilted Christmas Tree Skirt to share.
Previous Christmas in July posts this year have included Christmas Quilt Patterns and DIY Holiday Gift Baskets. I especially recommend the Christmas Quilt Patterns if you are planning to make your Christmas tree skirt double-sided. Any of those patterns would work well for the back side of the tree skirt.
We’ll get to the double sided part in a bit, but first let’s talk about how to make a Christmas tree skirt!
How to Make a Christmas Tree Skirt
This Christmas tree skirt tutorial is for a hexagon (6-sided) shape and the construction of the pieces leaves a natural hole in the center for the tree trunk.
This pattern uses equilateral triangles and this Tips for Triangles tutorial will help you with cutting perfect little triangles where all sides are equal.
For this pattern, you are going to start with 2½” strips (yay for jelly rolls!) and use the 60* line on an acrylic quilt ruler to get perfect triangles.
You need 288 triangles total.
Alternating triangles up and triangles down, sew three triangles together as shown below. Repeat 35 times to make 36 total.
Sew the remainder of the triangles into pairs.
Using pairs and sets of three, make the six rows for each section of the quilt pattern. The top row will have three total triangles, row two will have five, row three will have seven, row four will have nine, row five will have 11 and row six will have 13.
You need six sets.
Sew the rows together, matching the triangle seams and pinning at each seam.
That’s one completed section of the six sections needed. Repeat to make the other five.
Sew the six sections into pairs, and then sew the pairs into the quilt top. You just made a Christmas Tree Skirt!
Two Sided Tutorial
This is where you’ll make the decision if you want your tree skirt to be two sided or not. If not, you can use any fabric as the backing. If you do make it two sided, you’ll want to make sure the thread you use for quilting and the fabric you use for binding will coordinate with both sides of the quilt. Any of those Christmas Quilt Patterns mentioned at the beginning would work well for the back side of a double sided tree skirt.
Once quilted, trim away the excess batting and fabric from the sides, and cut open one of the seams. Then you’ll be able to cut out the excess batting from the center too.
Bind as normal.
Tree Skirt Tutorial in Action!
This last Christmas I used my single sided version as a pretty winter display quilt in the front window.
I also had custody of my mom’s two sided version and used that as a very large tree skirt for a very small rosemary tree.
I used the red side this last year but the blue version is there for next time.
Also, mini rosemary Christmas tree? Heck yes! The house smelled so good!
