Sunset Plaid Quilt Pattern Release
It’s my favorite of all days – new pattern release day! This is the Sunset Plaid Quilt Pattern, and this one has been rolling around in my brain for years!
Seriously, for years.
A Pattern in the Making
Sunset Plaid Quilt Pattern had an unusual origin, at least for my quilt patterns. Unlike my other patterns, this one didn’t start with the block shape, or even a bundle of fabric. Sunset Plaid Quilt Pattern came about because of a children’s book.
Say what!?!?!?
In the book The Little Blue Truck, or one of the sequels, there is a beautiful sunset illustration, full of blues and purples and oranges of all shades.
I was instantly hooked, and spent several years planning a way to use those colors to create a sunset quilt.
Eventually, Sunset Plaid was born!
A Quilt with a Fun Ombre Effect
From the darkest purples and blues in the upper left, to the lightest purples and blues in the lower right, Sunset Plaid is shot through with an orange glow.
I love the ombre effect this quilt creates, although that wasn’t my intention while in the planning phase.
I found myself trying to recreate not just a sunset, but a snowy sunset as I planned out fabric placement.
It hasn’t been made yet, but I think Sunset Plaid would also make an excellent Christmas Plaid!
Actually, for the first time ever, I only made one version of Sunset Plaid before releasing the pattern.
I do think Sunset Plaid Quilt Pattern would also look great highlighting the pinks of sunset rather than the oranges, or maybe even mixing some yellows, pinks and oranges together.
I would also love to see Sunset Plaid in a thoroughly non-sunset color palette.
What colors do you see this pattern in?
Now that I’ve got a photo of Sunset Plaid in the fall, and now in winter, I’m determined to not let this quilt leave my house until I can get a spring and summer photo too!
You can find the Sunset Plaid Quilt Pattern in my Etsy Shop, along with lots of other great patterns and quilts for sale.

I’m so glad you are enjoying the pattern! It will be so fun to see how someone interprets the colors. Since I only made one version of this quilt, I’m really excited to see how another Sunset Plaid comes together with other fabrics in the seven colors.
