New Quilt Pattern Release – The Temperature Quilt Pattern
I wrote a new quilt pattern that I am excited to release today; the Temperature Quilt Pattern!
What is a Temperature Quilt Pattern?
A temperature quilt is a textile representation of the daily high and low temperatures for a given location over the course of a year.
Every fabric within the quilt is assigned to a temperature range and every time the daily high or low is in that range, that fabric is used for that block.
That’s Such a Fun Idea, But What Date Range Do I Use?
That is totally up to you!
Some people choose to do January 1st to December 31st of the current year and make one block each day. This is a fun way to do a slow quilting project, because you’ll never be able to work ahead but will have to wait for each new day.
My quilt shown here has a date range that starts on the day I Was born and finishes on my first birthday.
The variety of options for date ranges means that you can make your Temperature Quilt in any way you want to!

So Many Date Options and Gift Ideas! How Do I Choose Fabrics?
Unlike most quilt patterns, there are no specific fabric requirements for a Temperature Quilt Pattern.
A temperate climate will have a smaller temperature range than a location that has lower lows in the winter and higher highs in the summer.
You can assign one fabric to every temperature, or create 2-5* ranges for each fabric.
The fewer number of fabrics used, the more of each fabric that will be needed. Also, the temperatures in the middle of your range will most likely appear more often in your quilt, so you will need more fabric for those ranges than the ones on the outer edges of your temperature range.
Do you have to use a rainbow of fabric?
No, of course not!
The quilt I made for myself from this Temperature Quilt Pattern has a rainbow of fabric in the original Blueberry Park fabric line. The blue on white fabric represents all temperatures below freezing, and there are a couple of blocks where both the low and the high for the day were below freezing. The darkest purples are the slightly above freezing colors, then through the blues, into the teals and aquas for moderate temperatures, and then yellow, orange and pink are the summertime highs, the 70s-90s.
Interestingly, the pale blue that was 52*-55* was both the most common high temperature in the cooler months and the most common overnight low in the warmer months. But, because it is a softer color, the quilt does not read as mostly blue. Instead, it reads as mostly green, the fabrics which ranged from 56* up to the upper 60s or very low 70s.
I have also made two temperature quilts recently in non-rainbow palettes.
For my brother I used greens and blues.
For my mom, I used the lightest blues down to almost navy, with a dark purple and a couple of light purples.
No rainbow required!
Is This a Large or Small Quilt?
This temperature quilt pattern yields a quilt that is 48” by 62” inches. If a larger quilt is desired a border may be added.

Vacation Flashbacks – Quilts in Glacier National Park
My temperature quilt is one of the quilts I took with me on my Glacier National Park adventure, these photos are from Two Medicine in the Southeast Corner of the park where it was a gazillion degrees and too hot for either hiking or quilt snuggling.
Now it is brightening up these dark almost-wintery days in my living room.
